Fiber Sensing: An Innovative Approach by SK Telecom and Nokia 제이샤인, 2024년 08월 13일2024년 08월 13일 SK Telecom and Nokia Collaborate to Enhance Optical Fiber sensing SK Telecom and Nokia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to commercialize a new technology called ‘fiber sensing’ that monitors the status of wired networks using Artificial Intelligence (AI), the companies announced on August 12. This technology is expected to enhance network stability by detecting the impact on wired networks due to various environmental factors. The ‘fiber sensing’ technology monitors phase changes in optical cables to detect damage or impacts to the network and can identify sudden incidents caused by earthquakes, climate changes, and nearby construction. SK Telecom and Nokia plan to be the first in Korea to commercialize this technology and aim to internalize it by accumulating demonstrative data. This technology can be immediately applied to existing wired networks without distance limitations, allowing for rapid implementation in backbone networks, ensuring nationwide network operations without service interruptions. It also aims to establish an intelligent preemptive response system that can minimize damage by responding quickly in the event of accidents. Both companies anticipate that the adoption of this technology will equip them with advanced technological capabilities essential for the AI era and will continue to collaborate to ensure the provision of stable services in the future.
